Shayla and Kayla competed in the Annual MSEN Day hosted by UNC-Charlotte on Saturday, April 13th. MSEN Day is an annual math and science competition event. Each year approximately 80 students from the NCSU NC-MSEN Pre-College Program compete against students from eight other NC-MSEN Pre-College Programs across North Carolina. Shayla & Kayla displayed their skilled teamwork efforts in the “Write it, Do it” Competition won them 2nd place. The students whom attend this event compete against their peers in events ranging from math and science testing to creating water bottle rockets, parachute egg drops, oratorical contests and a quiz bowl. This year NC State’s MSEN Pre-College walked away crowned 2013 winner of the competition.

Matthew has been selected to participate in our Young Scholars Program offered summer 2013 at NC State University in Raleigh, NC. This experience is designed to enhance your understanding of the future of the current research in science, engineering, and medicine related to personal health sensors, nanotechnology. Matthew will receive a stipend of $1500 for full participation in the program.

The Raleigh STARS program was created to extend the reach of the Raleigh College and Community Collaborative (RCCC) into the student body of each participating school. The STARTS program provides students with leadership, research, and public speaking experience. By conducting rigorous empirical research, students provide recommendations and potential solutions to Raleigh education and workforce problems.

Our students presented their research on March 23, 2013 at the McKimmon Center at NCSU. Our school was the only high school represented in the STARS Research Symposium along with students from all of the colleges and universities in Raleigh.

Students: Asiyah Al-Khawaja, Felix Vivongsy, Ailyn Pineda, Jesus Cruz, Mike Foley, and Tony Kamuhu

The group researched and presented on What Factors Effect High School Student Decisions to Attend College?

Congratulations to the Robodogs! (updated)

We want to congratulate members of the Robodogs Robotics Team (Zac Olech, Riley Blackmon, Felix Vivongsy, and Miguel Castillo) for their win this past weekend. The Robodogs won the 2013 North Carolina Regional. They were ranked #1 in qualifying and completely undefeated through the entire competition, which was a first for the competition. Their win qualifies them to compete in nationals in St. Louis, MO. Way to go guys!

Soji recently attended the Youth Legislative Assembly (YLA) in Raleigh where he participated as a delegate. The Youth Legislative Assembly (YLA) is a mock legislative session where high school students voice their opinions and vote on issues concerning local, state and national government. The three-day session is patterned after the N.C. General Assembly. At the conclusion, a final report is drafted and distributed to the governor and legislators.

Shayla and Kayla competed in the Annual MSEN Mini-Runoff. The Students had the opportunity to compete in various activities. The girls participated in the Write it, Do it Competition and won 1st place. They will join the winners of the other activities and represent the NC State MSEN Pre-College Program at the Annual MSEN Day event at UNC-Charlotte on April 13th. Shayla and Kayla, we are proud of you!

We would like to congratulate Trey Cornish as he competed and placed (4th) in the NCHSAA Mid-East Regional Wrestling Championships and became STEM’s 1st State-caliber scholar-athlete! Not only did he qualify for the State Wrestling Championships in Greensboro this week, he also made the State All-Academic Team. Way to go Trey!

We would like to congratulate Zach Olech who was selected to be a part of the Robodogs Robotics “Core” Team. He and his team mates will be competing at the 2013 Palmetto Regional FIRST Robotics Competition in Myrtle Beach, SC, March 1st and 2nd. It’s rare for a rookie team member to make it into the core team but Zach has the right stuff! We wish you well in your competition Zach!
